1616-1686. Italian painter of the late
Baroque period, active in Florence. He
created intensely emotional versions of
religious subjects, such as The Last
Communion of St Jerome. Dolci was the
foremost painter in Florence in his time and
continued to be much admired in the 18th
century. He was also a portraitist, and was
sent to Austria in 1675 to paint the Medici
wife of the emperor Leopold I.
